At least 67 Chinese workers have been killed after scaffolding collapsed at a power plant in eastern China on Thursday, the Associated Press quoting state media reported.

The scaffolding involved was on a cooling tower being built in the Jiangxi province and that the total number of workers still trapped in the accident was unknown.

The accident occurred at 7 a.m. local time and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Thirty-two fire engines and 212 firefighters were deployed to the scene, the Jiangxi provincial fire department said on its official Weibo microblog.

Industrial accidents are relatively common in China due to lax standards over three decades of turbo-charged growth although authorities have pledged to do more to improve workplace safety.
