Biz Journals reports Fort Mill-based Sunbelt Rentals Inc. will spend $8 million to expand its headquarters near the former Charlotte Knights stadium.

The S.C. Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits for the project. But neither the state nor the company disclosed how many jobs will be added.

CEO Brendan Horgan says the expansion shows that Sunbelt is pleased with its headquarters location in York County.

“We are thrilled to continue our investment in the county and state of South Carolina with our expansion project and very much appreciate all the support we have received,” he says.

The latest count of employment at the Sunbelt headquarters was 200, but that number dates to 2009.

Bobby Hitt, S.C. Secretary of Commerce, says Sunbelt’s base in York County is a testament to advantages the state has in logistics and in its roads network.

“We’re thrilled to have such a national leader expand in York County and will continue to support them as they thrive and prosper in our state,” Hitt says.

Sunbelt, which now says its one of the largest rental equipment companies in North America, moved to York County in 2006 with 160 employees from Oakhill Business Park in Charlotte.

Founded in 1983, Sunbelt rents machines and equipment from 550 locations around the country. It also has approximately 30 locations inside Lowe’s Cos. Inc. (NYSE: LOW) home improvement stores. It’s a subsidiary of Ashtead Group of the United Kingdom.
