In Sydney, a cable snapped off a floating crane, flew dozens of meters across the water and landed on the iconic Luna Park entrance face, causing minor damage.
Witnesses said they heard a loud bang just before the main cboom of the floating crane fell, followed by a ‘massive splash’ when it hit the water.
The floating crane can lift up to 210 tonnes and it was not yet known what went wrong. Safework was investigating the incident.
Waterways Constructions, a specialized maritime contractor which owns the crane and is conducting the renovation work, had workers on site but none were in the path of the crane.
Workers have reportedly secured the crane and the company directed calls for comment to NSW Roads and Maritime Services.
