The Reno County Commission on Tuesday approved Public Works Department declaring three pieces of heavy equipment as surplus in order to sell them, and then buying a used $390,000 Terex American HC 80 crawler crane for bridge building.

The commission authorized Public Works Director Dave McComb to dispose of a 48-year-old truck mounted crane, replacing it with a 10-year-old 80-ton crane.

“The truck mounted crane we use all the time,” McComb advised the commissioners. “We’re scheduled to build four or five bridges next year and need the crane for driving piles. The 1969 truck mounted crane is old – it was pretty old when we purchased it – and it’s not at the level we need to be constantly driving piles and building bridges.”

When originally purchased it, the intent was to use it for occasional repairs, McComb said  “We didn’t have a bridge fund or a bridge plan at the time,” he said.

The low bid for the newer crane, a 2006 Terex HC-80 crane with less than 5,000 hours of operation, was from Jayhawk Crane in Wichita, which should make delivery easy, McComb said. Other bids were from an Illinois company for a 2005 crane with 8,000 hours, for $9,500 more, and a Des Moines, Iowa, dealer for a 2006 model costing $410,000.

A new crane, McComb said, in response to a question from the commission, would be about $650,000.

The other surplus equipment includes a 1990 Caterpillar scraper and a chip spreader. The county bought the scraper new in 2001, but now seldom uses it, McComb said.

“If we ever need a scraper, we can rent one, use it and send it back,” he said. “There’s no need to have that thing sitting out there. Same with the chip spreader. It’s an item we haven’t used in eight or nine years.”

They will attempt to sell the scraper through public auction hosted by Caterpillar, said Road and Bridge Superintendent Don Brittain, and if that does not work, through Purple Wave Auction. The chipper will go on Purple Wave. McComb estimated both pieces of equipment should sell for some $60,000.
