Santa is back at Manchester town hall – after being hoisted up by a John Sutch Cranes Mobile All Terrain.

In a matter of minutes, the six-ton St Nicholas – who is affectionately known among Mancunians as Zippy – was lifted from Albert Square onto a huge metal plinth for the festive season.

After about ten minutes, the 4-axle All Terrain Crane had moved Santa in mid air across to the scaffolding, before it was secured down by workers.

They had to direct the crane operator to make sure it was in just the right position.

Dozens of onlookers took their places outside the cordon around the square to watch the action unfold.

A sign wishing Mancunians a happy Christmas will also be put up on Monday.

Santa’s 100,000 LED lights will be turned on as part of Friday’s Christmas lights switch on.

Work is now getting underway to build city’s famous Christmas markets.
