Jeffrey Langenfeld, a 27-year-old maintenance worker from the Town of Tonawanda, was killed Thursday afternoon in an accident involving a crane in an industrial section of Buffalo’s Old First Ward bordered by grain elevators.

The accident occurred in an industrial yard at BIDCO Marine Group, 220 Katherine St., a diving and marine construction company.

Police said Langenfeld died when a large piece of machinery fell and struck him.

Buffalo police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said Langenfeld was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly after 1:10 p.m.

Buffalo police and fire personnel responded to the accident, DeGeorge said.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration also responded to the scene.

An OSHA representative did not have more details.

A representative of BIDCO declined to comment, saying that an investigation was continuing.

BIDCO, also known as Buffalo Industrial Diving Co., employs commercial divers for projects ranging from underwater salvage operations to removing zebra mussels from water intakes.
