Breakbulk operator Thorco and United Heavy Lift have formed Thorco Projects, a joint venture specializing in project cargo and heavy-lift logistics.
JOC reports, both companies are family owned. Thorco, the shipping unit of Danish conglomerate Thornico, was founded in 2003 and is owned by Christian and Thor Stadil. Hamburg-based UHL, based in Germany, was founded last year by Lars Rolner, who has more than 30 years in the industry.
Thorco has a fleet of multipurpose general cargo and heavy-lift tweendeck vessels with capacities ranging from 7,500 to 19,600 deadweight tons. UHL operates four ice-classed 19,100-deadweight-ton multipurpose vessels and one 10,000-deadweight-ton roll-on, roll-off project carrier.
Rolner said the joint venture’s combined fleet will provide services covering general, project and heavy-lift cargoes, using ships with up to 800 metric tons of lift capacity, and deck carriers that can load units weighing up to 8,000 metric tons.
