Shipbuilder and heavy-lift specialist Calm Oceans has started construction of two heavy-lift semi-submersibles designed to serve project cargo movement for offshore platforms.

The vessels will each include two onboard cranes and will have lifting capacity of 7,500 tonnes. They are expected to be used in construction and decommissioning of offshore platforms and are scheduled to be complete in 2018.

The firm has previously constructed the largest shipyard crane in the world, the Taisun, which has been tested at 25,000 tonnes. Developed in conjunction with Huisman Equipment, the Taisun is one of the largest heavy-lift cranes for semi-submersible drilling rigs, and has achieved the record of most lifts between 14,000 tonnes to 18,000 tonnes.

Headquartered in Singapore, Calm Oceans has also pioneered the mono column platform, or MCP, for the offshore oil and gas industry.

This month, the firm partnered with Norwegian offshore company Bergen Group to market the self-elevating, multipurpose MCP system for offshore projects. The first MCP is under construction at Blue Island Shipyard in China.
