Montgomery House now due to be demolished ‘in phases’ after three failed attempts to raze it.

A block of flats in Seaforth which has withstood three attempts to bring it down remains standing this morning.

The partially demolished 15-storey tower block, Montgomery House, has defied all efforts to raze it to the ground.

Flat owners One Vision Housing has now said demolition contractor J Bryan (Victoria) Ltd will carry out the demolition of the remaining structure “in phases.”

Montgomery House and its sister tower, Churchill House, were both due to be demolished on Sunday morning, in an operation that was due to last only a few hours.

But neither demolition went according to plan – Churchill failed to come down immediately when explosive charges were detonated, but came crashing to the ground hours later.

Montgomery House, however, resisted all attempts to bring it down on both Sunday and Monday.

Part of the tower came down yesterday, with some of the rubble left scattered over a neighbour’s garden.

The failure of the latest demolition attempt meant nearby residents in the exclusion zone – made up of around 70 properties – had to spend a second night away from their homes, either staying with friends or relatives or taking up the offer of hotel accommodation.

Meanwhile, more footage has emerged of the demolition attempt at the Seaforth towers in Sandy Lane.

They show the initial explosive charge failing to bring down Churchill House, and the partial collapse of Montgomery House.

The most recent update from One Vision Housing stated that the demolition contractor was now planning to carry out a phased demolition of the remaining structure of Montgomery House.
